Meaningful call combinations in a non-human primate

چکیده
We conducted a series of playback experiments with free-ranging putty-nosed monkeys at Gashaka Gumti National Park, Nigeria. In a first experiment, we observed the behavior of the females of a habituated group in response to playbacks of natural call series of their own male. A female could serve as focal subject if she was located at the periphery of the group while the male was at the opposite side, hereby ensuring that the male’s calls emanated from the correct direction. Playback trials consisted of five ‘hacks’, five ‘pyows’ or a five-call P–H sequence. Using a GPS unit, the focal female’s location was marked prior to and 20 min after playback, while her behavior was monitored continuously. Our results showed that playback of ‘hack’ series (usually indicating eagle presence) inhibited movement in females (median = 1.0 m) and Meaningful call combinations in a non-human primate

P-50: Elongating and Elongated Spermatids Manufactured In Vitro from Non-Human Primate Pluripotent Stem Cells
Background: We have recently shown that human embryonic (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) can differentiate into advanced spermatogenic cells including round spermatids by in vitro culture (Easley et al., Direct differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into haploid spermatogenic cells. Cell Reports 2, 440-446 2012) and also, in collaboration, that rhesus spermatogonial ...
متن کاملShort-latency category specific neural responses to human faces in macaque inferotemporal cortex
In this article I would present evidence to show that timing of the flow of neural signals within the ventral visual stream is a crucial part of the neural code for categorization of faces. We recorded the activity of 554 inferotemporal neurons from two macaque monkeys performing a fixation task. More than 1000 object images including human and non-primate animal faces were presented up to 10 t...

متن کاملCampbell's Monkeys Use Affixation to Alter Call Meaning
Human language has evolved on a biological substrate with phylogenetic roots deep in the primate lineage. Here, we describe a functional analogy to a common morphological process in human speech, affixation, in the alarm calls of free-ranging adult Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli campbelli). We found that male alarm calls are composed of an acoustically variable stem, which can be f...
متن کاملSuffixation influences receivers' behaviour in non-human primates.
Compared to humans, non-human primates have very little control over their vocal production. Nonetheless, some primates produce various call combinations, which may partially offset their lack of acoustic flexibility. A relevant example is male Campbell's monkeys (Cercopithecus campbelli), which give one call type ('Krak') to leopards, while the suffixed version of the same call stem ('Krak-oo'...
